Guide: Smart Advice: Rumour reveals iPhone Fold will come with a 3D printed hinge

According to a recent report from China, the upcoming iPhone Fold is expected to feature a 3D-printed hinge. This will help minimise the crease on its folding display. It’s actually the first time seeing exact details about 3D printing used on the iPhone Fold’s hinge. Rumours also have it that the iPhone fold will feature liquid metal as well as dual-layer glass.

Furthermore, this development will be a breakthrough, just as Oppo’s Find N6 has pioneered this process on its second-generation Titanium Flexion hinge. Oppo realised its zero-feel crease by laser-measuring the differences in hinge depth at the microscopic level; and after which, applying 3D liquid polymer to out the hinge, thereby making it slimmer than the hinges on previous foldables.

However, previous reports claim that the iPhone Fold will match the Oppo Find N6, in relation to minimizing its display crease. This is clearly a key focus for Apple. The 3D printed components aren’t new to the company. This is because it already uses 3D printed titanium casings for its Apple Watch series and the iPhone Air’s USB-C port. The process of 3D printing is also more efficient as it uses up less material compared to conventional forging manufacturing.
