Simple Breakdown: Essential Reading: Android 17 to get Notification Rules as an added advantage over iOS in Managing Alerts

Android is known for its good performance in handling notifications better than iOS. A new report suggests Android 17 will receive a new Notification Rules feature to improve notification management. It’s expected to give users more precise control over alerts from apps and contacts, which will help them better manage interruptions and organize notifications in a smarter, more flexible way.

Android 17 Notification Rules for notification management

Details from the Android 17 Beta 3 update suggest Google is working on a new ‘Notification Rules’ feature for the system. This works by letting users create custom rules based on specific apps or individual contacts, leading to a more detailed and personalized notification control for Android.

It will also include options for searching and selecting apps or people, and tools to quickly select or deselect entries. Once rules are created, users can assign actions such as Silence, Block, Silence and Bundle, Highlight, or Highlight and Alert. Silence and Block already exist. Including bundling and highlighting means the system will be more advanced for organizing alerts.

With Notification Rules, you can manage alerts from specific people without fully blocking them. Silencing calls or messages from certain contacts won’t affect the overall call settings, making it more flexible than the current notification tools.

As for the ‘Highlights’ and ‘Highlights with Alerts’ options, we’re not sure of what they do for now. Since this feature also appeared in One UI builds, it might not just be limited to Pixel devices. The feature hasn’t been launched yet, but will soon be live.
